Our guide to all the best indie events during this weekends Southport Festival
This weekend sees the return of the Southport Festival – three days of music, art, poetry and more in venues throughout the town centre. With a huge & diverse range of activities to choose from, but just which are of amazing #southportindies have got involved?
Wesley Street Festival
Wesley street, with its colourful, quirky shop fronts and it’s unique charm is one of our favourite spots in the town centre. The traders, all independents, work hard as a collective to maintain the street’s charm and to host their own events throughout the year. As part of the wider festival programme, the traders are again hosting their successful ‘festival within a festival’ with some new twists for 2017! They are inviting you to cruise the line with a day packed with seaside activities from face painting to games, music and mini zorbs!
Remedy has two afternoons packed with a diverse range of brilliant performs. From spoken word poetry to local folk legends Untrained Melody – you can soak up something new with a gin in hand and some great street food. Us? We have the pop punk band Skimmer, one of the last acts to record a John Peel set, on our itinerary!
Get your rock on
Talking of Punk, there are some great rock acts in some great live music venues in town. The Fox & Goose, if you are yet to encounter it, is a superb live venue, with regular brilliant rock, acoustic and alternative gigs. This weekend they have not one but 3 nights of music, followed by an open stage night on the Sunday (can it get better? An indie venue allowing unknown, indie performers to get on stage and perform alternative music?). Another great venue, another great band, The Phoenix also has the superb FUBAR performing.
For the Jazz & folk fans
The wonderful Modjango perform two sets on Saturday in the intimate settings of a Great Little Place. With their contemporary jazz guitar and the amazing food on offer, relax & let the music wash over you. Lords Café also has two great performances duo Marrakesh Express and singer Alan Henry. Again, Lords provides a brilliant and intimate setting to sit back, enjoy good food and soulful music! Wayfarer’s Arcade, one of our favourite indie shopping destination hosts harpist Susan Lambert, providing even more elegance and ambiance
Art finding fun
It isn’t all about the music – the Southport Contemporary arts trail winds its way around the town centre with individual works of art placed in the windows of local, independent businesses. Collect your form from the Arthouse and discover them all to be in with a chance of winning a selection of goodies from the businesses involved or just simply spot them as you are out and about and send us some photos when you discover them!
Laugh your socks off
Big Comedy UK return with one of their acclaimed comedy pub crawls. Joining them at Bar 88 at 7pm and follow as they head to four independent venues to catch five top class comedians! We would love to tell you which indies are joining the fun but that would give away the mystery
