Get your Golf on
So the Open is finally upon us and town is already buzzing with activity thanks to the interactive zone, the art installation and all the Official Open vehicles and activity around the town.
All manner of murmurings of the international celebrities in town – from a sighting of George Clooney to talk wafting our way of Will Smith staying at the Vincent and Royalty staying in Formby, it is time to step up our office wear game I think. If you have spotted anyone or even better have pictures, then do tell! Top name golfers have also been visiting local businesses and joining in with the activities in town too.
We will be soaking up every minute of the atmosphere this weekend with a wealth of great events in the independents doing this town proud in front of such a high profile international audience.
Whether you have tickets and will be spending your weekend watching our Tommy Fleetwood or just along for the ride, here are some great options for you to get into the swing of things (bad pun intended).
Get into the spirit (sorry – last one) in one of the many 19th holes in town with a celebratory glass of Birkdale Distillery’s Golfers Gin. It doesn’t get more indie then this – and it can be enjoyed in so many excellent venues – from Boulevard West to The Exclusive Piano Bar, Corridor, Remedy, Tap & Bottles and Cheshire Lines (to name just a few).
Not a gin drinker? There is great live music in bars throughout with venues like The Phoenix, Avenue, The Chop House, The Hungry Monk, new bar on the block Cocoa House and the aforementioned Cheshire Lines all pulling out all the stops with great bands all weekend.
There are great pre-golf champagne breakfasts from Remedy and Town Gardens Cafe are offering amazing value Golfer’s Beer Breakfast and WAG’s champagne breakfasts to start your day on the course right.
The excellent (and newly refurbished) Reuters is offering free burgers in their garden area BBQ for all golf visitors, watch the golf on their big screen and mingle with some high-profile golf fans (disclaimer: they may not be the real thing).
The newly named Clay Cow – formerly Bar & Burger Company is also offering 20% off for golf spectators and flash your ticket at the excellent Fig Bistro on Eastbank Street for 10% off your food bill. Coupled with their excellent food this is perfect for a relaxed and amazing meal after a long day of golfing it up.
If you didn’t manage to get tickets but are still a fan there are plenty of big screen’s streaming live – head to Punch Tarmey’s or the brand new Khepri to watch in style.
For fashion lovers, there are great offers on at Reputation Menswear and Muse have even opened a pop up shop on Market Street – shop 'til you drop before this outlet shop closes Sunday. Shops from Over the Moon Kids to Bartons Gifts have great golf related gifts and accessories to get you in the mood.
Indies all over town are also entering the spirit with golf themed window displays – wander round and discover them and feel free to let us know your favourite as the best display wins £1,000! Lavish home. DKG hobbies, AT Hirons, Beauty beyond belief and Shaws Jewellery are just some to look out for.
Check out our listings for a list of great places to eat, drink and dance – brilliant salons for a pre-golf pamper and the best shops to head to if your other half is off to the course without you!
