Southport's Best Beer
Well we put it out there – we asked for your votes on the best place to get a great beer in Southport in honour of yesterday's #internationalbeerday and the votes were overwhelmingly in favour of…. *drum roll*…. The Cheshire Lines.
And what a worthy winner! Nestled among the houses down on King Street, if you haven’t ever stumbled upon it (or indeed out of it) then you really must make a point to venture there this weekend. The oldest pub in Southport, dating back nearly 200 years and is a listed building. it brings all the charm of a country pub in the town centre. Taken over this year by Vicky and her team, it has been given some love and is looking better than ever.
Reviews on Trip Advisor and Facebook gush with words such as “quintessential” “Friendly, inviting” and regularly describe the ‘Chesh’ as “a beautiful little pub with great ale and food” and they aren’t a bit wrong. The Cheshire Lines certainly hits all the right notes and is a British pub exactly how it should
Friendly, warm, local and with staff more than happy to help recommended a great beer, The Cheshire Lines also serves up great food, done simply and well. Their brand-new secret garden is the perfect spot for some summer drinks. Bring on this summer of ours and that’s where you will find us!
The best of the rest...
Beer aficionados who love to experiment with flavours, styles and try micro-brewery products - the legendary Inn Beer Shop on Lord Street has to be on your list of favourites. Coming second in our vote, it serves up over 200 international and craft beers, with bottles lining its walls. It’s simple and authentic surroundings make for an atmospheric evening and with staff happy to help and advise there is a good chance you will lose hours in here discovering beers from countries you didn’t even know existed!
Offering no less of an atmosphere and as diverse a range in beers is the ever brilliant and innovative Tap & Bottles in Cambridge Arcade.
For those of you looking for a modern setting and a choice of the latest European lagers in an ice-cold glass there are oodles of choices – including Reuters, Spender’s Bar, Peaky’s and Punch Tarmeys. The new and intriguing Cocoa House isn’t all about the chocolate – they have a unique beer dispense system all on show and is fascinating.
Great traditional pubs including the Guest House on Union Street, The Victoria on the Prom and The Windmill on Seabank Road. For a bit of good old fashioned British quirk – the Lakeside Inn is a must. Once the record holder for Britain’s Smallest pub it is a great little setting with a perfect summer spot by the marine lake.
As always - if you have your own favourite we haven't mentioned then sharing is caring! Get them discovered and tag us in on #southportindies @southportindies
