A wander down Market Street

Our aim is to help you discover and explore the hidden corners of Southport and unearth the wealth of brilliant, character-full businesses to be found there.  As such, we spent a happy Friday afternoon meandering in and out of the delightful shops along Market Street and we were both surprised and delighted at who we met and the great places we found. Here is our little guide to what is waiting for you there!

We started at the newly reopened Natures Remedies (they swapped sides of the streets to expand).  With its eye catching purple frontage & Mum and daughter team on hand to help – it is packed with health food, herbal remedies and teas and you will be greeted with warmth and personal service.

Next door, we were utterly blown away by the absolute heaven that is Broadhurst’s bookshop.  We confess to never having ventured upstairs, despite our love of books.  Oh, how we have been missing out.  Books line the walls from floor to ceiling with a huge range of new and rare.  Owner Laurie, who took it over from the original owners over 30 years ago, told us from his book lined office that it is one of the oldest book shops in the country and people travel from all over the world to buy rare finds there.  You could literally lose days browsing its titles….

A little further along the street and you will come across All About Cakes – a pretty shop full of everything a budding Bake Off contestant needs to bake a master piece.  With its lovely chandeliers and 100’s of gorgeous items we left the shop inspired to create!

One shop down and we headed into another brilliant way to lose an afternoon.  Quicksilver is music shopping at its best.  While streaming has its place, we love nothing more than time spent flicking through vinyl or cd’s to find that album we are missing or to take a chance on something new based purely on the sleeve art.  Quicksilver is like a step back to those wonderful days.

Next up – Maestro Barbers.  A great little barber shop that opened only last year, it was so stylish and intimate we wished we had a beard that needed trimming! Across the road is a great antiques shop, full of eccentric and wonderful finds to browse and discover. From vintage toys to antique furniture, this deep red shop has masses.

Our final stop was technically just off Market Street on Princes Street but Hobby Scene is worth including as it yet another Aladdin’s cave. Once again, it is full to the rafters with models and collectibles of all description.

Our journey ended there for this visit, but these are just a snapshot of what the often overlooked ‘Market Quarter’ has so much to offer. There are so many other great shops and businesses to talk about, let alone the market itself has many great independent traders (we will be guiding you there soon – watch this space). Enjoy exploring!
