Of all the gin joints…our guide to a great drink in Southport

Tonight we are off to sample the joys of Remedy’s Gin festival. We are told to expect over a 100 gins, complimentary, live music and great food. We don’t mind admitting we are a little bit excited. Gin is a new found love for us and Susannah at Remedy is almost entirely to blame for it for educating us on what we were missing.

It isn’t just us that have caught the gin bug and Remedy have earned a well-deserved place in Southport’s physical and metaphorical heart with their huge range of gins and knowledgeable staff. Owners Sarah & Susannah have made a huge impact in Southport’s night times since opening 2 years ago.  Bringing something unique and new to the town with a concept gin & whisky bar, they have led the ‘gin revolution’ in Southport, with style and through great events such as this weekends festival – run entirely by them.

But in this month of food and drink, we thought we would celebrate some of the other great specialist drinking destinations that are taking Southport by storm.

Real Ale Revolution

It’s not all about gin. Real ales have steadily regained popularity over the last decade. Never ones to be behind the trend, Southport has embraced the movement wholeheartedly.  The long-established Inn Beer Shop on North Lord Street has built a brilliant reputation for its relaxed atmosphere and huge range of ales.  Their success is evident from their decision last year to open a world beer shop next door.  If you have yet to pay a visit, you won’t be disappointed – its brilliant quirky, random setting provides a great atmosphere and there is surely nothing better than an ale in the sunshine?

Julian & Luke at Tap & Bottles are also riding high on the real ale wave with their superb gem of a venue in Cambridge Arcade.  Like Inn Beer shop, their success has led them to extend and the atmosphere is always amazing.  With knowledgeable staff, laid back décor and great live music it has a lot to offer and has quickly established itself in the heart of Southport’s night life.  Their now annual Beer Street beer festival is an amazing addition to the event scene and definitely a must for any real ale fan.

If rum is your tipple…

Make Le Grog on Seabank Road your go to.  An intimate little bar, run by the people behind Auberge and Sacrebleu, their speciality is rum from around the world and a selection of unique ciders.  Drink rum like the Spanish and savour the long drinks while enjoying good conversation.  Sample your way through the Latin world and experiment with the different flavours (whilst of course drinking responsibly. We can be held responsible for nothing). Our personal favourite is the Pampero Aniversario – with its long pleasant flavour.  Le Grog is perfect on date night, or for a midweek catch up with friends and make the most of the cosy setting.

Stylish bars, serving stylish cocktails have also become part of the Southport scene now, with mixing and flaring skills to rival any city centre venue. The Bold Hotel served us up a superb Mojito and French Martini last Saturday and with their new venue Khepri opening soon the offer will only get better.  Bar 88, The Vincent, The Office, Reuters and Corridor all have amazing cocktail menus and The Firepit has recently opened a cocktail bar upstairs we are yet to try but we hear only good things about.

The infamous Bar Humbug has recently undergone a huge refurbishment, opening two weeks ago to great reviews.  Famous for its brilliant atmosphere and even better cocktails and the bar staff’s skills in flaring, Bar Humbug was beloved. The newly dubbed Spender’s Bar – owned and operated by the original husband & wife team behind Humbug – is stunning and is equal in every way to any big city cocktail bar.  We will be giving it our first ‘official visit’ tonight. We will report back all we remember……
